You’ve probably seen the commercials for it, or heard your girlfriend declaring its benefits. But what exactly is “exfoliation" and is it just for women?

Technically, exfoliation is the act of scrubbing off dead skin cells and exposing the healthier skin underneath. It’s a sort of ‘Spring Cleaning’ of the skin that can and should be done as often as your skin requires. Even though it’s often associated with a beauty regiment for women, the truth is men benefit from exfoliation more than women, as they naturally have thicker and rougher skin.
Using just a face wash or soap will only clean your skin on the surface, but won’t make it look or feel any healthier. Men need to exfoliate and here’s why:
- It removes dirt and grime that accumulates in the skin over time. It also aids in de-clogging pores, which are the main reasons for acne and blemishes.
- The cells of our skin are naturally regenerated every 30 days, but once we start aging, this process slows down. Routinely exfoliating helps in removing the dead cells and helps slow the signs of aging.
- Exfoliating helps men achieve a better quality shave. Exfoliating before shaving can expose the facial hair follicles, allowing the razor to easily lift the hairs. The result is a smoother shave.
The take away is that men need to exfoliate. Exfoliating 1-2 times a week will help you keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.
